Maria Dosso

Nassau Suffolk Law Services Committee
Director of Communications and Volunteer Services
Islandia, NY
Maria Dosso is the Director of Communications and Volunteer Services at Nassau
Suffolk Law Services (NSLS), one of the largest providers of free civil legal
assistance on Long Island. She oversees NSLS"™ Legal Support Center for
Advocates, the agency's pro bono programs, and coordinates NSLS' community
education initiatives, social media, and public relations. These projects involve the
development of legal education resources disseminated to the community through
social media, publications, and online platforms.
Maria received her law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1987 and since then
has been employed at NSLS. In her first years as an attorney she represented
mentally ill clients in civil matters involving entitlements, rights of homeless
families, landlord/tenant disputes, consumer debt and bankruptcy, and family law
issues. She also co-counseled on several impact litigation cases involving access to
health care and the rights of homeless families.

In 1993, Maria created NSLS' Legal Support Center for Advocates, a service
providing technical assistance and legal information to community advocates. The
Center continues to provide a Helpline, publishes a bimonthly newsletter, and
coordinates community trainings with the goal of educating and training lay
advocates to provide knowledgeable and effective advocacy to their clients.
Maria also coordinates NSL's latest endeavor, the Community Legal Help Project.
The CLHP provides free legal consultations to the community based out of the
Suffolk Cooperative Public libraries and works in collaboration with pro bono
attorneys and legal service providers.
