Katie joined the Center in 2019 and is responsible for managing and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Center for Reproductive Rights' Pro Bono team. Katie also plays a key role in developing strategy around Pro Bono’s ability to leverage a global legal network of pro bono attorneys to increase the capacity of the Center’s advocacy efforts. In addition to working closely with the Center’s U.S. Program and Global Legal Program to create and sustain pro bono partnerships with the private bar on key Center litigations and legal projects, Katie plays a leadership role in the Center’s cross organizational teams, working closely with Development, Communications, and Finance, to ensure that Pro Bono is aligned with the overall strategy and priorities of the Center. Katie came to the Center from the private bar, where she served as firm wide pro bono manager at Fish & Richardson. At Fish, Katie led firm’s pro bono efforts and initiatives. Her deep knowledge of public interest legal organizations and involvement with the social justice advocacy landscape on a national level enabled her to bring meaningful pro bono opportunities to Fish’s attorneys. Katie’s ability to identify and leverage creative ways to utilize lawyers to increase access to justice for low-income individuals and social justice causes enabled Fish to significantly increase its pro bono impact and participation during her tenure. Before joining Fish, Katie coordinated the pro bono practice at the Legal Aid Society, the oldest and largest not-for-profit legal services organization in the country. In her role at Legal Aid, Katie served as the liaison between the private bar and a staff of 1,600, facilitating and sustaining pro bono partnerships in New York City, and overseeing pro bono referrals to the private bar in civil, criminal, and juvenile rights practices. In her role, Katie developed systems and protocols for emergent pro bono projects and oversaw the Society’s first-ever Public Interest Fellowship Program, which was created in response to the 2008 financial crisis and the resulting subsequent deferral of incoming first-year associates across New York City. Katie’s focus on promoting social justice extends beyond her role at the Center; she is a volunteer with CASA (“Court Appointed Special Advocates”), serving as guardian ad litem for abused and/or neglected children in foster care. Katie is also the co-chair of the Associate Board for Immigration Equality, the nation’s leading LGBTQ immigrant rights organization that provides free legal services and policy advocacy on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-positive immigrants seeking safe haven in the U.S. Prior to joining the Center, Katie served as a Board Member and Executive Officer of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel, a nonprofit mission-driven membership organization that focused on increasing access to justice through law firm pro bono. Katie received her BS from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where she studied political science and communications.
